Hello and Welcome

I am a Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist. I have been providing psychotherapy, and more recently, psychoanalysis, in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles for thirty years.

If you experience...
feeling lost and directionless after a loss
 worry, anxiety or panic
feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, worthlessness
obsessive, controlling thoughts and compulsions
fear of being left alone and lonely while also isolating from others

...then you may be experiencing symptoms of an anxiety or depressive mood disorder
or the effects of trauma associated with loss or family dysfunction, such as divorce, bereavement, emotional isolation and lack of communication in the family, childhood neglect or sexual abuse.

These symptoms often result in attachment and intimacy problems, making it difficult to feel either seen or known by others or able to see and know them.

In an exploratory, psychotherapeutic relationship, we can uncover and begin to understand underlying thought patterns that have developed into symptoms and repetitive behaviors, learn to make sense of them, and how they connect with obscure and underlying experiences of your true feelings about yourself and others.

When you feel deeply listened to and seen or known, you will begin to feel more alive and comfortable in your own skin. I help my clients with a broad range of issues related to: anxiety; panic attacks; depression, obsessive compulsive disorders, including those related to sexual abuse and sexual addiction; identity problems and discovery; divorce; loss and grief; couple/marital problems; and communication problems.

With 30 years of experience in crisis management, psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, I offer these services:
  • Individual psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for adults and adolescents (age 16-20)
  • Couples, relationships, marriage therapy
  • Adult survivors of child abuse and trauma recovery/PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder)
  • Sex addiction

"The Thinking Heart: Three levels of psychoanalytic therapy with disturbed children" by Anne Alvarez
How do we talk about feelings to children who are cut off from feeling? How do we raise hope and a sense of safety in despairing and terrified children without offering false hope? How do we reach the unreachable child and interest the hardened child?
"The Thinking Heart" is a natural sequel to "Live Company," Anne Alvarez' highly influential and now classic book about working with severely disturbed and damaged children. Building on 50 years experience as a child and adolescent psychotherapist, Alvarez uses detailed and vivid clinical examples of different interactions between therapist and client, and explores the reasons why one type of therapeutic understanding can work rather than another.
